Our Saturday Discipleship Program has continued to develop since its start in January of 2011. The program originally began as a feeding program on Bellevue Mountain…
Through this program community children, ranging in ages from one to 16, are ministered to every Saturday with older teenagers serving as volunteers. In July of 2012, the program grew into a more intentional Discipleship Program through the Lord’s continued guidance and our relationship with the community.
Each Saturday program consists of an activity, such as face painting, songs, guitar music, and a lesson in which we teach valuable character-building scripturally-based lessons on topics such as respect, violence, tolerance, etc. Participants are taught how to incorporate those skills into everyday life. After the lesson, volunteers distribute food to the children. (The Saturday program meal is often the only meal that many of the children will get for that day.) Respire Haiti’s desire is to encourage and empower this generation of children through Christ and His Word.
The influence of sports, especially soccer, in the Gressier community and the country of Haiti is enormous. Our goal through the Sports Discipleship Program is to not only give the children of the Gressier community an opportunity to play a sport they love, but more importantly, to also use sports as a way to raise up the next generation of Haitian leaders. In addition to teaching them the fundamentals of various sports, we are also able to teach them valuable life lessons such as respect, discipline, teamwork, success, failure, dedication, and hard work. The ultimate goal of this program, however, is to use sports as an avenue to share the Gospel and raise disciples who know and love God and who wish to share His love with others.
Most of the children in our program are in extreme poverty and have no example of Christ in their life. The desire of this program is to give these children and young adults in the Gressier community, a hope for an eternal future.
We currently have approximately 150 youth (10-17 year olds) in the soccer program forming four boys’ and two girls’ teams. Since 2013, Football Club Respire Haiti (FCRH) has participated in a local soccer tournament consisting of 11 teams.
Teams practice soccer up to three times a week. During the first practice of the week, youth are led in a devotional and the team is then given a Bible verse to memorize together for the week. Additionally, all practices begin and end with prayer. We believe, and have seen, that this not only begins to make the soccer team a family, but it also teaches the children their true identity in Christ.
Having started in 2015, the tennis program is very new to Respire and follows a similar format as that of the soccer program. Currently, the tennis program has 15 participants ranging in age from 10 to 17 years old.
